Entrepreneurs ask me all the time for introductions to other investors. Here is what every entrepreneur should consider when they ask anyone for an introduction to an investor.
If the person you are asking for introductions invests in the type and stage of your company that you are trying to raise money for and they have NOT invested in your company…do NOT ask them for any introductions. Here’s why…
Every single time I send a company introduction to an investor (or receive an introduction from another investor) the first question asked is, “How much are you in for?” This includes every stage of company across all verticals. If the introducer has NOT invested it better be for very good reasons — wrong stage, wrong vertical, etc. Otherwise it feels like you being sent someone else’s discard. None of those types of introductions have ever resulted in a good outcome in my experience.
And when you do ask for an introduction, make it as painless as possible for the introducer to help you — write a clean, concise email describing why the request is appropriate and include all the pertinent info for the target to decide if they want the introduction.
